Farming for Resilience in an Uncertain Climate

The climate is shifting. So must we.
The future may be uncertain — but one thing is clear: change starts with us.
We believe climate action doesn’t have to come from governments or global campaigns alone. It begins in the paddock. At the kitchen table. In our communities. And on farms like ours, where we’re working every day to adapt, restore, and regenerate.

At Fork it Farm, we’re embracing a slower, more thoughtful way of living. We're committed to farming in harmony with nature, building local food resilience, and increasing biodiversity, not just as an idea — but as a lived, working reality.
What we’re doing now...
We already farm regeneratively, focusing on soil health, animal welfare, and holistic land management. But climate change isn’t standing still, and neither can we.

Here’s how we’re actively preparing for a hotter, drier, less predictable future:

Land & Ecosystem Health
* Planted 1300 native trees (so far), establishing a wildlife corridor around our farm brook to support biodiversity, stabilise habitate and microclimates, and provide shade and shelter for animals.
* We manage grazing patterns to allow rest and regrowth, improving carbon sequestration and soil structure.

Energy Independence
* Installed 43kW of solar – our own mini power station – which powers cool rooms, freezers, the butchery, and farm infrastructure.
* This cuts our reliance on fossil fuels and stabilises energy costs for future-proofed food production.

Responsible Stocking
* As rainfall becomes more erratic, we’ve made the tough decision to de-stock part of our cattle herd to protect pasture health and reduce pressure on the land.

Waste-Stream Feeding
* We make use of surplus and by-product feeds to reduce food waste and lower feed inputs:
    * 4000L of whey per week from a local diary producer
    * Seasonal seconds apples and cherries that would otherwise go to waste, plus the occassional backyard acorn.
This keeps our pigs happy (and well-fed!) while helping local food businesses reduce their waste footprint too.

Biochar & Bones
* We’re experimenting with turning waste bones into biochar, creating a nutrient-rich soil amendment from what would otherwise be discarded.
* Biochar sequesters carbon, improves soil water retention, and helps us close the loop on our waste cycle.
What’s Next? Growing Community Resilience
True climate resilience isn’t built alone. It takes a village — and a network of farmers, growers, makers, and eaters.
We’d love to explore:
* A seasonal hyper-local food market
* On-farm education or workshops sharing traditional skills like preserving, butchery, and regenerative grazing
* Partnering with other producers to share waste streams, equipment, logistics and potentially a living landscape trust
* Silvopasture systems (integrating trees and grazing)

A Call for Slower, More Connected Living...
The future may be uncertain, but one thing is not: we all have a role to play. As individuals, as eaters, as growers — we can choose slower, more thoughtful ways of living. We can build local resilience, grow diverse systems, and care for our patch of the planet in a way that nourishes us all.

Whether it’s buying direct from a local farm, planting a few trees, or simply sharing meals that matter — change doesn’t have to be grand to be powerful.

We’re doing what we can. And we hope it inspires others to do the same.
